Security options have bloomed in accordance with changes within the industry. Ever since the tragic events of 9/11, emphasis on security fencing and gates, fixed barriers, vehicle restraints, and access control has risen. Security systems used for airports have also expanded to data centers, power plants, and other facilities where protection is an absolute must.

Vehicle Barriers in Cedar Rapids

There are two types of vehicle barriers: passive and active. Both can be moved or fixed in place, depending on how they’re operated, used, or put together. Dual classification applies to certain commercial barriers. Because there are no industry-wide standard terminology for vehicle barriers, the following definitions are used.

Passive Barrier Systems

Passive barrier systems are named as such due to a certain lack of moving parts. Instead of motion, they’re dependent on energy absorption transmitted to their foundations. Passive barrier systems include: guard rails, ditches, posts, bollards, reinforced fences, highway medians, and tires.

Active Barrier Systems

Active barrier systems require personnel or equipment to determine whether a vehicle is authorized to enter. Examples include: beams, gates, bollards, barricades, and tire shredders.

Fixed Barrier Systems

Fixed barriers can be either passive or active: permanently installed and cannot be disassembled and/or relocated without the use of special equipment. Examples include: pits, concrete barriers, retracting systems, hydraulically operated rotation systems, and steel barriers.

Portable Barrier Systems

Portable barrier systems are easily relocated, though sometimes equipment may be necessary to complete the transfer. Available as passive or active, examples include: highway medians, 55-gallon drums, and hydraulically operated sled-type barricade systems.

Hydraulic Pop-Up Barriers

Hydraulic pop-ups are immovable, sit at or below ground level, and typically encompass the entire length of a drive. These barriers are moved by hydraulic pistons. Designed to rise quickly so as to divert fast-moving vehicular threats.

Cable Restraint Systems

In most cases, cable restraint systems consist of ¾” to 1 ¼” diameter cables  installed at heights intended to stop vehicular threats. Cable restraint systems may be either certified or uncertified. Certified cable restraint systems have a K-raying determining how far vehicles of certain weights and sizes (and traveling at certain speeds) will stop upon hitting the cables.

Hydraulic Bollards

Hydraulic crash bollards are made of steel and used to protect U.S. embassies and federal facilities worldwide. They retreat to ground level and rise within three seconds to stop fast-moving vehicular threats. Easy to operate, these bollards work in tandem via three button stations or sophisticated security systems.

Crash Barrier Gates

Specially formulated to halt foot traffic and fast moving vehicles alike, crash barrier gates help prevent unwanted intrusions on grounded aircrafts, and for this reason are extremely popular with airports. Crash barrier gates require electrical gate operators and, per FAA requirements, move at a rate of two feet per second.

Barrier Arm Gates

Barrier gate arms feature tubular steel booms and function similarly to a parking arm gates. Upon reaching its closed position, the cable assembly contained within automatically loops over a large, steel saddle horn. Barrier arms gates have been designed to stop fast-moving vehicular threats. They’re available for electrical/mechanical/manual operation.

High Security Prison Gates

High security prison gates are operated from a remote site. Featuring a unique locking column, fully enclosed track, and chain assembles, they cannot be undone by hands on intervention.

Gate Automation

Today, gate automation is associated with a broad variety of access devices, including  telephone entry, anti-passback, retina scanners, three strikes, tailgating, fingerprint scanners, personal computers, and more. With all of these security access devices at your disposal, you can determine who can enter your facility and when.

Concertina Wire

Concertina wire is commonly used at nuclear power plants. Formerly used only in prisons, it was helpful as criminals are unprepared to deal with this, especially the severe form commonly known as the “razor wire.” As the number one fence contractor in Cedar Rapids, we encourage that special consideration be given to public safety for facilities that use this security wire.
